The Memoirs of Archbishop Emeritus George Francis Daniel

On Sunday the 27th April 2015 the Archdiocese in Pretoria hosted the book launch of Archbishop Emeritus George Daniel’s Memoirs.

The Launch was held at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Pretoria. The event started off with a celebratory mass which was followed by the book launch and signing by His Grace. It just so happened that the 27th April was also the anniversary of His Grace George Daniel’s 50 year Priestly Ordination, which was also celebrated with beautifully decorated cakes.

His Grace George Daniel was asked by the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference to start working on his memoirs, this was then published by the Christian Lives in Africa book series.

Born in Pretoria in 1933 to a family rich in ecumenical connections, George Daniel became a priest in the Anglican Church before making the difficult decision to enter the Catholic Church. He was ordained a Catholic priest after training in Rome. and returned to serve in the Pretoria Archdiocese as a parish priest. In 1975 he was appointed Archbishop of Pretoria. In the 34 years he served in this position, he played an important role in promoting ecumenism and inter-faith dialogue. His retirement ministry has focused on pastoral care to the disabled. In this fascinating memoir, Archbishop Emeritus George Daniel looks back with much wit and good humor on a long career, sharing charming stories of a full and enriching life of faith.

“Although I have known His Grace George Daniel for many years when he served as the Archbishop of Pretoria, only by reading his memoirs did I realize that I could have possibly met him as a young child doing my First Holy Communion at St Columba in Capital Park Catholic Church. Reading his memories of our pilgrimage to Fatima in 2006 brought back so many fond memories and I am amazed at the extent of His Grace’s memory and knowledge. What a privilege to have been asked to be the distributor of his memoirs and spread the word and life story of this great and humble man.”    – Maria Ferreira (Owner at Catholic Centre)

The launch day was highly enjoyed by all that attended and those lucky enough to get their books signed by His Grace will treasure their books forever.
